Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has formally inaugurated the construction of 1,200-MW coal-based power station at Matarbari in Maheshkhali, Cox's Bazar.

The Prime Minister laid the foundation of the video conferencing from Ganobhaban on Sunday.

A program was organized at Ganobhaban during the inauguration. At present, Japanese delegates including JICA Vice President, Japan's Prime Minister Special Envoy

17 percent of the primary infrastructure of this power project is already finished in 1414 acres of land in Mahesarbari and Dhalghata union of Maheshkhali. Project Director of Coal Power Generation Company of Bangladesh Abul Kashem said that the construction work was started officially through the establishment of the Prime Minister's Foundation. It is expected that the construction of this power project will be completed by December 2023.
Power Secretary Ahmed Kayakos presented a video presentation on the project at the beginning of the ceremony at Ganobhaban. Prime Minister's Energy Advisor Toufiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury, International Affairs Adviser Gowher Rizvi and State Minister for Power Nasrul Hamid were present at the function.

It is known that this power project is being constructed in Mahesarbari and Dhalghata union of 1,441 acres of land of Maheshkhali. Coal-based power plants will be built in Ultra Super Critical Technology. There are currently four hundred workers working in this project. In the process, more than two thousand workers will join the project, the project concerned said. Seven kilometer of naval channel for coal power plant in Matarbari and jetty for coal was to be built.

In fact, the government approved a project of Tk 36,000 crore for construction of power plant in Matarbari in August 2015. In the workshop approved by ECNEC, it is said that JICA will provide Taka 29 thousand crore for this project.
